What Works - The Work Program

Ideas about improving outcomes for Indigenous students in numeracy cover a lot of the same territory as longstanding discussions about improving the quality and impact of mathematics teaching. The use of the term 'numeracy', with its strong implications of practicality, makes this even more emphatic.

Contemporary ideas of 'working mathematically' have a strong emphasis on hands-on, experiential approaches that are closely related to numeracy learning. On the other hand, older ideas about mathematics — ritualised behaviour, right and wrong answers and so on — have proved difficult to dislodge in many settings.

As always, improvement in numeracy outcomes for Indigenous students will occur if effort is made, using what we already know about good practice. These case studies provide some illustrations.
