Literacy in Standard Australian English (SAE) is as central to the educational success of Indigenous students as it is to the success of other students. But, broadly-speaking, the literacy levels of Indigenous students are below those of their non-Indigenous counterparts.

For Indigenous students, there are often crucial overlays that can go unrecognised. Many, for example, are learning SAE as a second dialect or second or third language. This fact needs sensitive approaches that acknowledge the home language environment.

Evidence suggests that there are many routes to the same goal but you should be using only proven literacy teaching and learning techniques; those which have already been successful with Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.  Some are explored in these case studies.
